What could be wrong with my son?

Thursday my 8 yr old son was admitted onto the pediatric ward for a swollen knee... there was no injury it just swelled up and 45 cc's of fluid were drained from it. There was a fear it was a bacterial infection in the knee. The next day I was told they felt it was lymes disease and I just found out it was not. The orthopedic surgeon told me today at the appt. that he felt it was an auto immune disease. My father has lupus and scleroderma which he says makes my sons chances even greater. Can anyone give me any insight? He starts testing on thursday thru his pediatrician. Im going crazy and am an emotional disaster. I cant stop thinking of what might be wrong! Any Ideas?

So, my 17 year old daughter, who has been playing basketball for 10 years. She is 6'1" and about 200 lbs. She's been having problems with her knees swelling and a lot of pain. Well, I took her up to U of M to see an orthopedic surgeon who requested an MRI for her knees. The next day she called to say that my daughter has arthritis and that nothing could be done about it. Can this be true? She really wants to continue playing basketball when she goes to college, but the pain is getting worse. Does anyone have any suggestions to help out an athlete?
