My husband has been diagnosed with Diffuse Scleroderma. We have 4 children and I work part time. We are worried about the prognosis - but this seems to vary from doctor to doctor as each person's conditions are different. His skin and lungs are definitely affected. Should we be overly concerned about this disease? He is in the early stages. Wondering if anyone else can advise of what steps I might expect - and what I can do or plan for in preparation of the years to come. Thank you.

Have you ever heard of scleroderma? This is a rare condition that is increasing in frequency. It causes progressive fibrosis of the skin and internal organs. It is 3 to 4 times more common in women than men, particularly younger African American women, but it can affect anyone. The cause is unknown, but researchers suggest that environmental and genetic factors play a role.
In typical cases, patients first develop skin thickening on the fingers or elsewhere. Patients may complain of cold, swelling, and puffy fingers and hands. Arthritic symptoms are also common throughout the body. As the disease progresses, additional organs are affected such as the heart, esophagus, joints, muscles, and lungs. Patients can develop sudden severe high blood pressure and even kidney failure. There is no specific blood test for the diagnosis, although many different tests will be abnormal. There are several treatments but no cure as yet..If you are looking for a Charity, Please give to Scleroderma.

Difficulty breathing is a common health problem that many suffer with. Some, even deal with chronic lung disease. These people have such low oxygen levels, that they need daily oxygen therapy. For these people, the oxygen they receive improves their survival. The more hours during the day that they use oxygen during the day, the better the result is with their therapy.
For best results, experts advise 12 hours of oxygen use. And, they even say that if the patient will continue to do this on a daily basis, they will ultimately decrease their shortness of breath and lessen the stress that the lung disease is putting on their heart. As a result, their ability to sleep and exercise gets better in the process.
The chronic lung disease patient varies in how they suffer with their breathing. Some have difficulty breathing when they put forth too much effort or energy to do something. Others, when they sleep. For each patient, they can determine when they need the oxygen and use it then to help them get the needed benefits from it. Over time, the oxygen levels will be adjusted to their needs and their breathing begins to improve. This is great news for anyone who suffers from lung disease.
