Have you been watching Grey’s Anatomy? Katherine Heigl’s character, Izzy, is dying from cancer. Which kind of cancer? Skin cancer. It’s a cancer that is often overlooked in the OR, but one that affects many people everyday. So, how can you make sure that you protect yourself?
First, skin cancer will develop on areas of the skin that are exposed to the sun. These areas include your scalp, face, lips, ears, neck, chest, arms, hands, and legs. Unfortunately, it can also form on areas that barely see the daylight. It is a myth to think that because you tan easily you do not have to worry about getting the cancer. This disease affects all skin types and all complexions.
There are a few different types of skin cancer.
• Basal cell carcinoma. The most common. A pearly or waxy bump on your face, ears, or neck, or flat scar-like lesion on your chest or back.
• Squamous cell carinoma. Easily treated if detected early. A firm, red nodule on your face, or a flat lesion on your face, ears, neck, hands, or arms.
• Melanoma. The most serious. Brownish spots, moles, lesions, or bumps.
So next time you step outside, make sure you are wearing sunscreen.
