550152_diabetesMost adult Americans with diabetes are diagnosed with Type 2, a condition in which the body fails to properly make and use insulin and is relatively insulin deficient. Insulin is a hormone needed to turn sugar, starch and other food into the energy needed for daily life. It seems genetics may play a role, but a change in lifestyle can halt its progression. Losing weight, exercising regularly, and eating well can actually improve insulin sensitivity thus protecting against diabetes.

There has been enough research done for doctors and scientists both to say that people who eat more whole grains, nuts and seeds, fruit, green leafy vegetables and low-fat dairy are less likely to be diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. A simple change is to drink less sugary drinks like soda and fruit juice and have water with meals. Eat more water-rich vegetables and fruits for snacks.

Type 2 diabetes is serious, but people with diabetes can live long, happy, health lives. It is important to control diabetes because there are serious complications such as heart disease, nerve and kidney damage, and blindness. Make taking care of your body a priority and listen to the advice of your doctor and you can enjoy improvements in your health.
