As you get older, your nutritional needs change: eating right at any age

June 17, 2009 by admin

1163526_orangeAs we age, the basics of healthy eating don’t change but the specifics do. The basics include eating fresh fruits and vegetables, getting plenty of lean protein, avoiding sugary drinks, choosing low-fat dairy products and remaining active. As we move through life, we need more and less of certain foods.

Today, there a many obese Americans, and they keep getting younger. Instilling healthy eating habits in young children increases their chance of making healthy food choices in adulthood. Keep high-sugar, high-fat, processed foods to a minimum and encourage snacking on whole fruits, dried fruits and whole-grain crackers. As children grow, they need more and more calcium for healthy bones, so offer yogurt or low-fat ice cream if your teen is not drinking enough milk.

Adult nutrition needs are based on age, gender, and existence of medical conditions. Women need more calcium, vitamin D, and iron than men. As adults age, they need more fiber and water. Look for fiber-rich whole grains, whole fruit, vegetable skins and even supplements. If fiber is causing cramps and gas, evaluate water consumption. Protein is also important for the elderly and is available from soft foods like beans, yogurt and low-fat soft cheeses. Keeping healthy means making healthy choices and adjusting to your changing body and activity level.

Men and women aren’t the same: vitamins and supplements each of you need

June 16, 2009 by admin

1032220_freshIdeally, we would eat enough healthy, fresh foods to get all the vitamins and nutrients we need for optimal health. If your fast-paced life or tight budget keeps you from eating enough nutritious foods, it is important to take the right vitamins and supplements to stay healthy.

Women have special needs when breastfeeding, pregnant or during menopause and should consult with their doctor before starting or changing supplement their routine at these times. Women in general need more calcium, vitamin D and iron then men, but too much calcium in men is linked to prostate cancer. While both men and women benefit from omega 3 fatty acids, men only get benefits from the marine derived kinds.

Dietary needs are largely based on body weight, size and exercise level. Men require more fiber and protein then women and our nutrition needs change as we age. It is possible that every person in your house needs a different daily vitamin, so read the labels and ask your doctor if it’s a good choice. It is possible to overdose on certain vitamins like B-6 but the symptoms aren’t always fast-acting so it is important to reevaluate your supplements periodically or as your diet changes. Stay healthy by exercising and eating more fruits and vegetables.

Vaccines and autism: the debate over a link

June 15, 2009 by admin
Filed under General Health, Medical News

948813___antivirus__There are two main debates over links to autism and vaccines. One is over the preservative thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative used in vaccines from the 1980’s until 2003. The type of mercury in thimerosal is a neurotoxin that clears the body in 6 weeks and in theory should not be enough to do any harm. Babies getting vaccinated during this time, however, were injected with numerous injections exceeding the recommended safe levels of the FDA.

The CDC conducted several studies and found that thimerosal could not be responsible for the huge growth in autism cases, but held hearings in secret causing mistrust and fueling conspiracy theories.

The other main debate is over links between the measles, mumps, rubella vaccine and autism. The MMR is a live-virus vaccine that some people believe negatively impacts children born with compromised immune systems. The immune weakness may be genetic or environmentally induced, but these children cannot properly pass the virus. The virus remains in the gut causing an immune response and inflammation, ultimately spreading to the brain potentially causing damage and autism.

The NIH and CDC both say there are no links between vaccines and autism, but parents think there is more to the story and are going to continue researching the connection.

Developing diabetes? Eating right can lower your risk

June 14, 2009 by admin

550152_diabetesMost adult Americans with diabetes are diagnosed with Type 2, a condition in which the body fails to properly make and use insulin and is relatively insulin deficient. Insulin is a hormone needed to turn sugar, starch and other food into the energy needed for daily life. It seems genetics may play a role, but a change in lifestyle can halt its progression. Losing weight, exercising regularly, and eating well can actually improve insulin sensitivity thus protecting against diabetes.

There has been enough research done for doctors and scientists both to say that people who eat more whole grains, nuts and seeds, fruit, green leafy vegetables and low-fat dairy are less likely to be diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. A simple change is to drink less sugary drinks like soda and fruit juice and have water with meals. Eat more water-rich vegetables and fruits for snacks.

Type 2 diabetes is serious, but people with diabetes can live long, happy, health lives. It is important to control diabetes because there are serious complications such as heart disease, nerve and kidney damage, and blindness. Make taking care of your body a priority and listen to the advice of your doctor and you can enjoy improvements in your health.

Pet dander and you: keeping your house clean and safe

June 13, 2009 by admin

1178601_maince_coonsIts not the pet hair your allergic to, it’s the pet dander. The main allergen in pet dander is traces of a protein from microscopic bits of pet skin, saliva and urine. Pet dander is often found on fur of animals and can float in the air and settle in places pets are not allowed. In an allergic reaction, your body releases histamine in response and you can suffer itchy eyes, runny nose or nasal congestion, hoarseness, rashes, sneezing or wheezing.

To eliminate symptoms you must eliminate pet dander. Set up “pet-free” zones trying to keep pets out of the bedroom and definitely out of the bed. Get a good HEPA vacuum and get all the nooks and corners in your house, even in the pet-free zones. Use an air purifier or air filter for your furnace and vents. Cleaning the air eliminates lots of other pollutants, so this is a very healthy choice.

Groom all your pets regularly, outside if you do it at home, and pay attention to what you feed them. Some foods may irritate their skin, causing excess dander flaking. By keeping accumulated pet dander to a minimum, you should see a relief in symptoms right away.
