The basics include eating fresh fruits and vegetables, getting plenty of lean protein, avoiding sugary drinks, choosing low-fat dairy products and remaining active. As we move through life, we need more and less of certain foods.

Today, there a many obese Americans, and they keep getting younger. Instilling healthy eating habits in young children increases their chance of making healthy food choices in adulthood. Keep high-sugar, high-fat, processed foods to a minimum and encourage snacking on whole fruits, dried fruits and whole-grain crackers. As children grow, they need more and more calcium for healthy bones, so offer yogurt or low-fat ice cream if your teen is not drinking enough milk.

Adult nutrition needs are based on age, gender, and existence of medical conditions. Women need more calcium, vitamin D, and iron than men. As adults age, they need more fiber and water. Look for fiber-rich whole grains, whole fruit, vegetable skins and even supplements. If fiber is causing cramps and gas, evaluate water consumption. Protein is also important for the elderly and is available from soft foods like beans, yogurt and low-fat soft cheeses. Keeping healthy means making healthy choices and adjusting to your changing body and activity level.

In today’s society many people are doing a lot of different things to get thin. A few years ago everyone seemed to be doing Atkin’s. They were eating excessive amounts of protein and dropping pounds. What most people found was that the Atkin’s diet was a difficult lifestyle and once the normalcy in the diet returned so did the pounds.

Atkin’s may have lost some of its popularity, but other diets have surfaced. And there has been a surprising amount of popularity these days with vegetarian and vegan diets. Why are they so popular? Probably because almost everyone you meet who is vegetarian or vegan is slender, skinnier, slim, or whatever you prefer to call it.

So the question regarding these diets is, are they healthy? If you have a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle is it healthy for you to pass on this type of diet to your children? Experts are saying yes. These diets are apparently an excellent source of nutrition at all stages of life. Studies show that a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle/diet helps you to be healthier and also allows you to live longer. However, one thing to be sure of is if you are going to implement this diet, make sure you plan properly.

Eight Sensible Methods to Shed Off Those Pounds

Losing weight is really not as mind-boggling as you think. Here are eight simple and very easy ways on how you can shed off those unwanted pounds without going overdrive on the latest diet and exercise trends.

Learn about the Food Pyramid.

The food pyramid is a graphic representation of the food groups and the quantity or percentage of which that is needed by our body on a daily basis. If you are confused on how to balance your meals, you can always look at the food pyramid as your guide to healthy eating and living.

Go for grains!

Carbohydrates are the bodyGÇÖs main source of energy since they are the easiest to metabolize, making them readily available for the cells of the body. Instead of going zero on carbs, how about if you take in whole grain bread that is not only high in fiber, but is also a rich source of vitamins and minerals?

Glow your way back to health.

Did you know that there are essential vitamins and minerals that can only be made available for the body by taking in certain fruits and vegetables? Apart from the vitamins and minerals, this food group also has numerous antioxidant qualities that actually help the body fight aging and even certain cancers!

Be fat-choosy.

Not all fat is bad for the health. In fact, there is one type of cholesterol, called the HDL (High Density Lipoprotein) that actually does more good than harm to the body. This type of cholesterol actually carries cholesterol away from the bodyGÇÖs blood vessels to the liver where it is passed from the body.

Learn how to get the good fat going.

Believe it or not, these ways can actually boost your bodyGÇÖs HDL level: aerobic exercise, smoking cessation, cutting back on prepared foods that have partially hydrogenated oil on its label, lots of soluble fiber, and one to two drinks of alcohol per day even!

Lean back on salt.

Too much salt causes the body to retain water. Adding one plus one, you might as well add those same figures to the scale.

Curb that urge for inebriety.

Contrary to the notion that calories only come from food, drinks do contain calories as well. Alcohol is one of those few drinks that would fall under the category of empty calories.

You are what you eat GÇô and drink.

Choose what you drink as well. Mellow down on beverages that are processed, such as soda and the like. Go for fresh fruit juices and low fat milk instead.

How to Boost Your Immune System

Clich+¬s are clich+¬s because they make sense and are, almost always, timely. "Prevention is better than cure" is one of the old sayings we might as well follow. The only method to keep our bodies up and going is not to take medicine when we are sick but to avoid becoming sick in the first place. This means we have to keep our immune system in shape.

Most people wrongly believe that we cannot control our immune system but it is actually up to us to take optimum care of it. Here are several things that you can do:

Your diet should have plenty of antioxidants. This means eating fruits and vegetables with vitamins A, C, and E. Pop some of those blueberries and cherries then cook up some spinach and brussel sprouts. Finish up with tea. It might be hard to get the recommended amount of antioxidants so consider taking a daily supplement.

Slow down on the sweets. Sugar can affect your white blood cells and that is not in a good way. Avoiding it will increase the proper functioning of our immune system.

No fatty foods! At least, cut down on them. We all know the negative effects they can have on our health so adapt a leaner diet.

Make exercise a routine. You do not have to do it everyday. Three to four times in a week is enough to get good blood circulation. This allows your white blood cells to flow through the body and kill germs faster.

Drink water. Water cleanses our bodies and flushes out toxins from the body. You can also get some of those colon cleansing products to do this. Releasing dirt means getting rid of the bad stuff that hamper the proper functioning of our immune systems.

Zinc and other herbs are ideal. The herbs include garlic, elderberry, and astragalus. Make sure zinc is part of your diet, as it helps out our immune system when we get sick.

Get enough sleep and rest. Growth hormones are generated by our bodies every time we sleep. These hormones boost our immunity so catch up on your z's so you will not get sick.

Once you take care of your immune system, it will reciprocate by taking care of you. Once you follow the old clich+¬, you will worry less about medications and prescription drugs because you will not get sick at all! So, boost your immune system and live healthy.

Conventional farming uses a lot of toxic pesticides every year. It's not just farmers, either. Toxic pesticides are used by groundskeepers for all of our nation's city and municipal parks, and just the average city-dwelling home owner contributes to the problem by using pesticides on his lawn. There's a LOT of toxic pesticides out there. Go look on the shelves at your local grocery store, hardware store, farm and garden store, or discount department store if you don't believe me.

Have you ever read the list of ingredients on the can of spray that you use to dispatch roaches? Read itGǪif you can. Every day, more and more pesticides are being approved for use. It seems wise to look at the past for an indication of what the future might hold.

You've probably at least heard of the chemical DDT. The active compound was first discovered about 1936. By 1940 DDT was in use everywhere. It was hailed as a "miracle" pesticide. It killed all kinds of bugs on contact. It was even used during World War II to kill lice on war prisoners and on immigrants. DDT was some really good stuff, according to those who should have known. It took more than 20 years for those who should have known to figure out that DDT was deadly, all right GÇö it was deadly to bugs, it was deadly to people, and it was deadly to the planet. DDT is no longer used today, but it WAS used for a long time with the blessings of the government.

Do you even wonder just a little bit what those who should know will discover about the chemicals that are used in pesticides today might be doing to us and to the earth? I do GÇö I wonder, and I worry.

In order to be "certified organic," products must be grown and manufactured in a way that abides by the standards set by the country they are sold in and those "standards" do vary from country to country.

When you see a label that says "certified organic," that means that the way in which the food was grown and processed met the standards set by the government of the United States. You will see labels that simply say "organic." This label doesn't really mean very much unless you could know what country's standards was used to produce the food. In many countries, the standards for organic products are considerably lower than they are in America.

In order for the products produced on a farm or ranch in the United States to be "certified organic," the farm or ranch must have met some very, very tough standards. The farmer or rancher must also have paid some pretty substantial fees. It really isn't quite as simple as it sounds.

Basically, from the point of view of the consumer, organic food means that the food was raised without using toxic fertilizers, pesticides, or drugs. You might think of the tomatoes that you grow in your backyard without the use of commercial fertilizers or pesticides are "organic," and basically they are, but they don't meet the standards set by the U.S. government to be "certified organic."

I'm not telling you not to raise those "organic" vegetables in your backyard garden. Of course, you should. They won't be covered with all kinds of harmful chemicals, and that is much better for you and your family. But if you want to set up a fruit stand on the corner and sell your overflow, you can say that the produce is organic GÇö but you cannot say that it is "certified organic" because it isn't.
