One is over the preservative thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative used in vaccines from the 1980’s until 2003. The type of mercury in thimerosal is a neurotoxin that clears the body in 6 weeks and in theory should not be enough to do any harm. Babies getting vaccinated during this time, however, were injected with numerous injections exceeding the recommended safe levels of the FDA.

The CDC conducted several studies and found that thimerosal could not be responsible for the huge growth in autism cases, but held hearings in secret causing mistrust and fueling conspiracy theories.

The other main debate is over links between the measles, mumps, rubella vaccine and autism. The MMR is a live-virus vaccine that some people believe negatively impacts children born with compromised immune systems. The immune weakness may be genetic or environmentally induced, but these children cannot properly pass the virus. The virus remains in the gut causing an immune response and inflammation, ultimately spreading to the brain potentially causing damage and autism.

The NIH and CDC both say there are no links between vaccines and autism, but parents think there is more to the story and are going to continue researching the connection.

Depression and Nutritional Deficiencies as the Causes of Reversible Dementia

Depression is not only a symptom of dementia, but it can cause other symptoms typical of dementia, as well. Consequently, depression is often misdiagnosed as dementia, particularly in the elderly. This misdiagnosis is tragic, because the majority of people with depression can be effectively treated. In addition to the depressed mood, loss of interest and social withdrawal we commonly think of as depression, both syndromes can produce sleep disorders, weight loss or weight gain, psychomotor retardation (an abnormal slowing down of activities and mental processes) and a diminished ability to think or concentrate. In many instances, depressed people, particularly older individuals, may appear confused and may suffer memory loss.

People with dementia score differently on neurological tests and mental-status tests than people with depression. And psychological testing or psychiatric examination can offer additional information, if needed. The most common methods used to treat depression are psychotherapy, which employs psychological methods ranging from psychoanalysis to behavioral modification, and pharmacotherapy, which uses antidepressant drugs. Treatment may involve either method or a combination of the two.
Standard psychotherapy is generally effective only in the early stages of progressive, irreversible dementia, when the patient still has certain cognitive abilities intact. But modified psychotherapy, music therapy or art therapy may be helpful in later stages. And while some antidepressants can exacerbate dementia's cognitive symptoms, others can be used to improve depressive symptoms and improve function.

Different vitamins and minerals are responsible for different bodily functions and, when deficient, different symptoms. Generally speaking, the B vitamins (including B12, folic acid, niacin and thiamin), which are responsible for the body's use of energy from foods and for normal tissue production, produce a variety of dementia symptoms when deficient. Vitamin B12, for instance, supports the growth and function of nerves and the spinal cord. Deficiency of this vitamin is linked to a deterioration in mental functioning, to neurological damage and to a number of psychological disturbances. The symptoms that parallel those of dementia include memory loss, disorientation, changes in personality or mood, and hallucinations.

A deficiency of folic acid, which is involved in the synthesis of nucleic acid, the genetic building block for all cells, can produce fatigue and loss of appetite. Niacin deficiency can produce irritability, anxiety, depression and other dementia symptoms; and a deficiency of thiamin, which is necessary for normal brain and nerve function, can result in depression, irritability, concentration difficulties, fatigue, lack of appetite and weight loss. Vitamin E deficiency can produce lethargy, apathy, inability to concentrate and a loss of balance. And deficiencies in the minerals calcium and magnesium have also been known to cause dementia symptoms. Primarily by increasing a person's intake through diet, supplements or injections. Once a deficiency has been identified and corrected, symptoms generally disappear.

How to Boost Your Immune System

Clich+¬s are clich+¬s because they make sense and are, almost always, timely. "Prevention is better than cure" is one of the old sayings we might as well follow. The only method to keep our bodies up and going is not to take medicine when we are sick but to avoid becoming sick in the first place. This means we have to keep our immune system in shape.

Most people wrongly believe that we cannot control our immune system but it is actually up to us to take optimum care of it. Here are several things that you can do:

Your diet should have plenty of antioxidants. This means eating fruits and vegetables with vitamins A, C, and E. Pop some of those blueberries and cherries then cook up some spinach and brussel sprouts. Finish up with tea. It might be hard to get the recommended amount of antioxidants so consider taking a daily supplement.

Slow down on the sweets. Sugar can affect your white blood cells and that is not in a good way. Avoiding it will increase the proper functioning of our immune system.

No fatty foods! At least, cut down on them. We all know the negative effects they can have on our health so adapt a leaner diet.

Make exercise a routine. You do not have to do it everyday. Three to four times in a week is enough to get good blood circulation. This allows your white blood cells to flow through the body and kill germs faster.

Drink water. Water cleanses our bodies and flushes out toxins from the body. You can also get some of those colon cleansing products to do this. Releasing dirt means getting rid of the bad stuff that hamper the proper functioning of our immune systems.

Zinc and other herbs are ideal. The herbs include garlic, elderberry, and astragalus. Make sure zinc is part of your diet, as it helps out our immune system when we get sick.

Get enough sleep and rest. Growth hormones are generated by our bodies every time we sleep. These hormones boost our immunity so catch up on your z's so you will not get sick.

Once you take care of your immune system, it will reciprocate by taking care of you. Once you follow the old clich+¬, you will worry less about medications and prescription drugs because you will not get sick at all! So, boost your immune system and live healthy.

In the past, we have always treated our children's cold symptoms with liquids and some good ole cough medications. Well, the old school of thought has been rejected in the new era of medicinal knowledge. A major drug manufacturer recently announced that they were pulling cold medications for kids under 4 years old. The reason? They felt it didn't have any significant benefits for young ones who caught the cold. This reasoning also has the FDA considering a ban on meds for children under the age of 6. This ban may take a year or so, but it poses a very serious question. Do our kids need cold meds? Experts agree the answer to that question is a wholehearted NO!

Learning from the past

When the manufacturers first made medication for children's cold symptoms, they did not run any clinical tests or trials. They assumed that the child's body was much like an adult's but just a smaller or GÇ£miniGÇ¥ version. This flawed thinking led them to believe that they could produce the same type of meds for children and adults alike. Decades later, they realize that children have different medicinal needs then full-grown adults (you would think that would be a no-brainer). It goes to show you how much the drug manufacturers really care about the consumer (but that is beyond the scope of this article).

Parents to blame?

Every year, thousands of children are rushed to the hospital due to overdoses from cold, flu or cough medication. This is mostly the parent's fault because they are the ones who give their kids the medication. Another mistake most parents make is giving their children more than one cough or cold medication at a time (a dosage their young and fragile bodies cannot tolerate). The reason most adults think it is ok to give their kids meds is that there is not enough public awareness of the dangers of cough and cold medications.

A happier & healthier child

So next time your little one gets sick, don't go reaching for the medicine cabinet. Instead, make sure your children recieve plenty of fluids, vitamins, a healthy diet, and (most importantly) much-needed rest. If they are still sick and their condition worsens, take them to the physician immediately for a thorough diagnosis. This will ensure that if there are other complications (such as Pneumonia or bacterial infection) they will be treated early and with greater effectiveness. It is better to be safe than sorry, especially when it comes to the kiddies.
