The incidence of eczema has increased in infants over the past decade. There are many hypotheses surrounding this significant increase in incidence of eczema but there is no conclusive evidence supporting any specific theory. Some fraternities of the medical establishment claim that the rising levels of environmental pollution may be a contributing factor to the development of immune hypersensitivity in infants while others have highlighted the increased use of processed foods and artificial additives in the modern diet.
The persistent itching associated with eczema is often the cause of most of the distress to the sufferer affecting their level of social interaction, sleep and daily coping. Constant scratching of the affected areas further aggravates the condition and can promote infection of the affected areas by bacteria and fungi. This often complicates the eczema and antibiotics or antifungal applications may be required. Conventional treatment of eczema involves the use of corticosteroids applied topically on the skin or taken orally. This suppresses the affected area and the associated immune processes but long term use of steroid creams and oral medication is not advisable due the side effects.
A few simple tips in coping with eczema :
- Stop using soap for bathing and rather opt for a plain unscented cream at bath time.
- Use greasy applications and lipid-based creams like petroleum jelly to protect the skin.
- Discontinue all dairy in the diet especially for children but monitor for other allergens like egg yolk, wheat, nuts, soya and corn.
- Reduce exposure to allergens in the environment. Do not allow pets to live indoors. Remove carpets and thick curtains from the bedroom. And use a mattress protector as the mattress is one of the main reservoirs of house dust mite.
- Increase intake of foods rich in zinc as this assists with skin repair and healing.
- Avoid woolen clothing and use natural fabrics like cotton in clothing.
