Lung is a respiratory organ which is essential for breathing. In most of the complex life forms and mammals there are two lungs present in the either side of the heart. Its function is to carry oxygen in to the blood stream and to carry out carbon dioxide from the blood stream. It is a paired organ situated in the chest of your body which performs respiration. It is 10 to 12 inch long and the two lungs are separated by a bone called mediastinum.
Lung Rehabilitation
Lung rehabilitation is also known as pulmonary rehabilitation. It is a program designed for people who have lung disease. Its only aim is to enable the people to achieve and maintain their maximum level of independence and functioning. Even though there are many lung diseases the most diagnosed disease in lungs is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Other lung diseases which are included in this type are interstitial disease (ILD), cystic fibrosis (CF) and pulmonary hypertension (PH). Although most of the pulmonary disease is caused due to the chronic obstructive disease, people with other type of disease do not have much risk. The pulmonary rehabilitation program may improve the quality of life by reducing shortness of breath, increasing exercise, decreasing the number of hospitalization etc.
The pulmonary rehabilitation programs are usually conducted in an outpatient setting or at the personGÇÖs home. Pulmonary rehabilitation program is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary program which helps the person with chronic disease towards an improved life. A successful rehabilitation program includes the medical evaluation, exercise testing, physical conditioning and patient education. The most important component of successful rehabilitation is oneGÇÖs desired motivation to stick into it. Inpatient service often takes place in special rehabilitation center and it is mainly useful for those persons who were suffering from severe lung disease. The service provided by respiratory and physical therapist is the most successful form of lung rehabilitation. Most of the people are treated for 8 to 12 weeks and one should be follow those instructions even after the program is over and this will help to improve the health.
The supportive therapy such as respiratory therapy which includes the oxygen therapy and physical therapy for chest can be used in conjunction with pulmonary therapy. Most of the pulmonary rehabilitation offers educational program about lung function, how to interpret lung function tests etc. The pulmonary rehabilitation training involves breathing technique and energy conservation, how to monitor the symptoms of disease, how to use the best of medication, dietary etc. It is difficult to cure the disease using short term treatment when it is in the chronic stage. It has been established as a mean of exchanging standard therapy to control, alleviate symptoms, optimize functional capacity and reduce the medical and economic burdens. A successful rehabilitation requires a patient to incorporate changes in his behavior.
