for example, are horizontal stretch marks caused by the the stretching of the skin in the direction perpendicular to the stretch mark? same with vertical stretch marks. another example is if i gain weight, and my stomach becomes fatter, which direction are the stretch marks expected to grow?

    In a way yes,
If your stomach becomes fatter, it would most likely have a few going down and usually 1 or 2 lines going left to right
