I know back pain can be relieved by medical examination and treatment but I feel that there may be some foods (for example bananas, which are rich in Calcium) to get some relief from back pain?

There are no foods that help relieve pain, including chronic back pain.

However, there are some foods and nutrients considered antiinflammatories, and because of that action, may sometime relieve some pain. Some of the antiinflammatory items are
fish oil (suggest 4-6 tablets per day),
phytochemicals found in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts and beans and peas, and
vitamin D, which is from the sunshine, or from vitamin D supplements.

Other than the meager changes you may feel from these adjustments, you will find it best to use proper body mechanics and specific back exercises that a physicial therapist may suggest for you.

By the way, bananas are not rich in calcium. Bananas are sources of calories and potassium. Milk, cheese, yogurt and cooked turnip greens are sources of calcium. You may want to get a nutrition book that identifies the nutrients found in each food.

Good luck with your back. Lenore Hodges, PhD, RD, LD
